The surfing industry can impact on people in both good and bad ways. People enjoy surfing, so this is a good thing but the making of boards can have a negative impact on a shaper's health.
Positives .
Surfing is a good way for people to exercise and be healthy. It is good to get out in the sun and get some Vitamin D (not too much though). It is also a good way to help people relax. A group called Surf Aid does some very cool things, like helping little kids and adults to get back on the feet and supply them with water and food. Surf Aid is helping communities by teaching the young people how to surf. Surfing Aid also brings laughter to the kids in the Indonesia community. They also work with mums and children in Indonesia, doing out health checks, weighing babies and generally looking after them. |
Negatives
If surfers /people keep on polluting, people wont want to go to the beaches and we do not want that to happen. This would be bad for places like the Gold Coast. This would be very bad for the Gold Coast economy because there would be less surfers and less tourists.
Most surfboards are made from a slab of petroleum polyurethane with layers of toxic polyester resin. The toxic exposure for surfboard makers (Shapers) is very unhealthy for them. Fibers from the fiberglass causes lung cancer and many diseases. The chemicals in the surfboard and used when making it can also cause asthma and cancers. |
